Dodgers Call Up Josue De Paula for Ohtani

The Dodgers are promoting 21-year-old prospect Josue De Paula from Double-A Tulsa to replace Shohei Ohtani, who is headed to the injured list with lingering knee, biceps and swing-related discomfort. De Paula earned the opportunity after hitting .303/.401/.547 with 27 home runs, 37 doubles and a 145 wRC+, while demonstrating improved power, strong contact skills and disciplined plate appearances. He also impressed as the Futures Game MVP with a 416-foot, three-run homer, and manager Dave Roberts said the organization trusts his ability to handle velocity and control the strike zone. De Paula is regarded as one of baseball’s best offensive prospects, though questions remain about his defensive position and whether he can handle a corner-outfield or first-base role. Mookie Betts said he knows De Paula as a good teammate from spring training and is excited to see him join the Dodgers as the club pursues another championship.
