Rays Clinch Playoff Berth on Caminero Walk-Off
The Tampa Bay Rays became the first major league team to secure a 2026 playoff berth, defeating the Houston Astros 3-1 on Junior Caminero’s walk-off, two-run home run in the ninth inning. Caminero’s blast was his 40th of the season, after he had taken the American League home-run lead with his 39th homer in a 7-1 win over Atlanta earlier in the week. Drew Rasmussen limited Houston to one earned run over seven innings, while Tampa Bay’s balanced roster has been powered by strong starting pitching, defense, speed and contributions from players including Yandy Díaz and Chandler Simpson. The 88-59 Rays are returning to the postseason for the first time since 2023 and hold a three-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East with 15 games remaining. Tampa Bay will face the Yankees four times from Sept. 22-24 as it pursues its first division title since 2021.
