Routine Voting Issues Fuel Online Fraud Claims
Voting disruptions in several U.S. jurisdictions—including ballot-scanner problems in Westchester County, weather-related polling-place relocations, power outages and missing equipment—quickly fueled online claims of widespread fraud. Election officials and other evidence pointed to technical or weather-related causes, and there was no credible evidence that the problems were engineered to suppress votes or rig results. False or unverified claims also included texts giving voters incorrect polling-place information and allegations of illegal vote counting. The episodes show how routine election-day problems can be recast on social media as evidence of conspiracy before facts are established.
