Democrat Eric Armstrong won Iowa House District 20 on Nov. 3, 2026, by 865 votes after suspending his campaign Sept. 7 for health issues. His name stayed on the ballot because Iowa's Aug. 14 withdrawal deadline had passed. KCCI reported unofficial totals of Armstrong 4,602 votes (55%) to Republican Keith Jones 3,737 (45%). Armstrong, a retired railroad executive succeeding Josh Turek, will represent a western Iowa district that includes Council Bluffs and Carter Lake. The Associated Press called the race. In a Thursday Facebook post Armstrong said District 20 voters sent a clear message about the direction they want for Iowa and he would carry that message to the Capitol in January. He told The New York Times on Wednesday he would do his best to represent the district but still has health issues. Jones, a Pottawattamie County supervisor and retired police lieutenant, told Fox News the public deserves to know more and asked whether Armstrong lied about being sick to cover a damaging personal story, saying public trust at that level is important. WHAT'S CONTESTED: Jones questioned Armstrong's health claims and called for a media investigation; Armstrong has not publicly identified the illness. The vote margin and Sept. 7 suspension are not disputed in the record.

Armstrong should focus on his health first, but it's encouraging he still plans to serve the district.
This win in a Republican area fits the pattern of Democratic gains across Iowa this cycle.
Voters clearly wanted a Democrat in that seat even with Armstrong off the trail, and the ballot rules made it happen.
